Going on holiday or travelling for a weekend break with your baby can be an exciting adventure, but knowing what to pack for your little one is essential for keeping your child comfortable in different climates. Whether you’re going somewhere hot, are heading on a city break or will be staying in a cooler location, being aware of what’s best to bring will help to make preparing for your trip a little easier.
Here’s what you need to know about what clothing to pack when travelling with a baby.
General Tips
Before looking specifically at the different clothing types to take with you when travelling, here are some general tips you can use for packing your baby’s wardrobe efficiently:
- Breathable Fabrics: Cotton and bamboo are ideal for the majority of climates, as they’re soft, comfy and regulate temperature well.
- Pack extra outfits: Bring some spare clothing with you if you’re heading into unpredictable temperatures or as backups if the clothing you have gets dirty.
- Comfort is key: Avoid itchy clothing or anything that makes your baby fussy and uncomfortable, especially on long travel days.
- Bring accessories: Hats, socks and mittens are all handy to have available to use when needed.
Packing For Warm Weather
If you’re heading somewhere sunny, then keeping your baby cool and protected from the sun should be your top priority. It’s essential you bring along lightweight, breathable onesies – both short sleeved and sleeveless – lose fitting rompers made from cotton or muslin, light trousers or shorts to help protect their skin from the sun and, if you’re planning to swim, baby-swimwear that’s comfortable – you can even purchase UV-protective swimwear if needed. Try to avoid layering too-many pieces of clothing, as you don’t want your child to end up overheating.
You should also bring a sun hat that shields their face from sun rays, soft sandals and shoes for older babies and a light muslin blanket for shade and comfort if the weather begins to get cooler. Baby-safe sunscreen should also be packed in your case and used before you go outside to keep their delicate skin safe.
Packing For Cold Weather
If you’re off to a place with chilly temperatures, you’ll need to bring items that ensure your baby is cosy and not affected by those cool temperatures. Essential clothing to pack in your case includes fleece onesies for extra comfort, pieces that can be layered, snowsuits (if you’re heading somewhere with extremely cold temperatures) or a warm insulated jacket. Accessory wise, you’ll need thick socks or booties, mittens (if they’re not already built into your onesies) and a soft, well-fitted hat to protect their hands and head from the cold temperatures. Remember to avoid or remove bulky clothing and jackets when travelling in the car with your baby to ensure they’re able to fit safely into their car seats – use a blanket for warmth in the car instead.
Packing For Mild Weather
When temperatures are neither hot nor cold, it can be difficult to know exactly what’s needed to take with you - you’ll need to ensure your baby won’t get too cold, but also won’t feel too warm. This is where layering plays a big part in your baby’s holiday wardrobe – short sleeved bodysuits paired with light jumpers or cardigans can easily be adapted for when the temperature either heats up or begins to get a little chilly. Alternatively, leggings or trousers paired with different t-shirts and a lightweight jacket can be handy to bring along, as can a raincoat and hat for unpredictable weather throughout the day. If you’re going to a destination where the weather is a little mild, make sure to check the forecast before heading out so you can prepare outfits in advance. If you’re expecting rain, a rain cover for the pram will help to keep water away from your baby, but if they do end up getting wet from the rain make sure you have backup clothing and a towel on hand to dry them off so they don’t feel uncomfortable or cold.
Travelling with a baby doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and by planning ahead you can ensure your little one is happy and comfortable throughout their holiday. Hopefully these tips will help you prepare for your trip away.
