Fun Indoor Activities For You & Your Baby

Fun Indoor Activities For You & Your Baby

Staying indoors with your baby doesn’t have to limit the fun you have together – whether its due to rainy days or the weather is too hot for you and your baby to safely enjoy outdoors, there are plenty of engaging activities you can do at home to bond and stimulate development. Here are some ideas that will keep your baby entertained and happy.

Tummy Time

Tummy Time is essential for building your baby’s neck, shoulder and upper body strength, and keeping your baby engaged is imperative to ensuring they’re feeling the benefits of this activity. Make tummy time engaging by adding toys, mirrors, blankets and textures, or use specific mats and toys made to grab your baby’s attention whilst aiding their development.

If your baby starts to get fussy during tummy time, you can change their position or lift them onto your chest so they feel close to you, whilst encouraging them to lift their head. Tummy Time should be done in small bursts, being gradually increased over time as they get stronger and more comfortable.

Storytime

Reading to your baby is a fantastic way to boost their cognitive and language skills. Set aside a corner with some cozy pillows and blankets and sit with your baby as you enjoy a story together. Whilst they may not fully understand all the words, the bright colours and pictures in the books will help to captivate their attention. Use different voices for different characters and point our different objects and characters as you make your way through the book. As your baby gets a little older, incorporate interactive books with flaps, mirrors or textures to engage their senses.

Musical Play

Music can help to bond you and your baby, and doesn’t have to be expensive either. You can make instruments at home, such as using a jar or tin with rice inside to create a shaker. Encourage them to make their own sounds by shaking these instruments, clapping or tapping on the ground. You can also sing along to nursery rhymes or children’s songs, and dance around the room together to aid their sensory and motor development, whilst improving their coordination and boosting their mood.

Sensory Play

Sensory toys and experiences are a wonderful way to stimulate your baby’s senses and encourage them to learn more about the world around them. Gather baby-friendly materials like soft fabrics, rubber toys and rattles and sit with your little one as they explore each item. Teach them about each texture and what they can feel or hear, helping them with sensory development and introducing them to new experiences in a safe environment.

Sensory play can be themed too – whether that’s around the beach or the garden, you can bring elements of the outdoors in, and adjust the objects and textures as they begin to explore more independently.

Bubbles

Bubbles can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors and can be a magical and mesmerising experience for the youngest member of your family.  Trying to reach bubbles as they’re floating is great for their hand-eye coordination, and provides light-hearted entertainment. Make sure you get non-toxic, safe bubble for your baby to enjoy, and keep towels on hand to wipe up any slippery surfaces.

Spending time indoors with your baby can be rewarding and joyful when you incorporate creative and engaging activities. These fun ideas provide excellent opportunities to bond with your baby while supporting their growth.
